Musical interlude

-Those music-loving crazies at tvmusic4u.com caught my attention recently with their ad for the British Invasion compilation. It turns out the oldies song that always sounded like it was called Ferry 'Cross the Mersey is indeed the actual title. (And the ferry people love it.)

We can thank Gerry and the Pacemakers for this wreck of a song. They also made the equally nauseating Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying, a tribute to poor anger management and eventual deep-seated rage.

-Underrated: Friday I'm in Love. The Cure's 1992 hit is a silly love song and sounds straight out of the 1980s. It's ridiculous really that this song came out when it did, a year after Nevermind. But with the benefit of time, it's a throwaway yet solid rock song to me. If Fleetwood Mac had stayed out the '80s, they might have made this song.

-Oft-heard: The Middle. It can't be an Atlanta commute, apparently, without Jimmy Eat World. Weren't they on SNL back on April 2, you say? Yes. Luckily, I like the song.

-Hmmmm: Grave Digger. Dave Matthews is playing this song in concert now, but it is reportedly not on his band's new Busted Stuff album. He played a solo acoustic version for an Atlanta radio station a few days ago. Lyrics appeared to be still developing, and this rendition sounded far more intense than performances in the spring. (Out of respect for the improvement, I won't link anything until the newer music and lyrics circulate.)

It's written very much in the vein of the Spoon River Anthology, and at first listen — a major caveat — is one of the better songs I've ever heard him play.

Thoughts?
