First day of the playoffs

Wednesday, October 1st, 2003

The Cubs went to Atlanta, shook Atlanta's house and did some serious dancing on Atlanta's face. Right now anyone who has ever lived in Chicago for any extended amount of time has become very excited. In Chicago itself, old people are postponing death so as to see what happens. Babies there are learning how to talk early, just so they can say, "Cubs win!"

Did you hear the Chicago fans roaring last night? An Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist seems to think this is a good thing. Who is rooting for, the stadium? Braves fans couldn't cheer their mother on the cheeringest day of their lives if they had an electric cheering machine. Washington Post sports columnist Michael Wilbon (a real sports columnist, not some wishy-washy stadium-lover) put it well earlier this year: "You want the worst sports town in America: Here it is."

None of this is said to deny that the stadium is a good stadium. I've been there; I've sat in the first row. It's a good stadium. So good that Braves fans might trying filling it themselves one of these days.
