Go work at a local newspaper, they said. Work your way up. Nail down the basics at the school board meetings and county courthouses; then build your experience to take you to higher places. It's a rough road, they said, but it's the way to go.

But they never mentioned anything about how the local townspeople, in their own folksy way you knew and chronicled so well, would one day see your body on the newsroom floor and think you to be asleep. Instead of dead. Which you were.
