In search of perfection
In 1997, I watched Mike Mussina lose a no-hit bid to a Sandy Alomar liner with two outs remaining. I blamed my brother for the loss after he mentioned the no-hit possibility minutes earlier. We were watching on television.
In 2001, I watched Mussina lose a perfect game with two strikes and two outs in the ninth. Carl Everett looped one in. I was watching on television.
Last night, with Mussina perfect through four against the Red Sox, I went to bed because I had the six o'clock shift this morning. I hoped I would somehow awaken if the bid got into the ninth. As it turned out, the Sox broke the stretch in the seventh. But Mussina won anyway.
