The headline in the Washington Times asks, "Legend in making?" The paper's Tarron Lively attends John Legend's post-release show and enjoys the night. "The high point of the show was his performance of the album's centerpiece Ordinary People, which is making its rounds on urban radio. Accompanied at first only by his own elegant piano playing, Mr. Legend eventually was joined by the band, which closed out the song with a flourish. It was enough to make you wish the studio version had been recorded like that."

"You're the black John Mayer," people apparently tell John Legend. So Legend tells Rashod Ollison of the Baltimore Sun, as Ollison writes an altogether different kind of major-paper piece about the rising R&B singer.
Decked out in dark jeans, a V-neck T-shirt, a toffee-colored corduroy blazer and chestnut-brown loafers that match the man purse slung across his slender body, John reminds me of those arrogant fraternity brothas I couldn't stand in college. Back at the hotel, homeboy barely looked me in the eye when I smiled and introduced myself. He gave me a limp, dishrag handshake.
Read on. You know you want to. Legend does his first show on Jan. 15 in Washington, so hopefully a Post or Times take will follow.

I hadn't heard of John Legend before this morning, but it appears we'll all be hearing his name more soon. Today's Washington Post puts in a good word for Get Lifted debut album, and the audio clips on his site seem to back up the review. He's got a wide and honest soul voice, and his future seems likely to depend on the chances of his material.
