Turns out my birthday is not rare

I’ve always felt my birthday was an uncommon date to be born. I blame celebrities for this. Horoscopes always throw in celebrity birthdays. And when I was a child, June 25 was not a celebrity birthday winner.

George Orwell born on the day in 1903, but he died 30 years before I was born. Sidney Lumet got the day in 1912. While Network and Dog Day Afternoon are now two of my favorite movies, Lumet is not a child’s example of a famous person. Same for June Lockhart, Eric Carle, Carly Simon. Peyo, creator of the Smurfs, was closer. But still, he was no Smurf. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, when my awareness of shared birthdays was peaking, Sonia Sotomayor, Anthony Bourdain, Ricky Gervais, and Linda Cardellini hadn’t arrived on the scene yet. George Michael and Dikembe Mutumbo were a start. But so few.

So, it was surprising to me this week to find my birthday just outside the top 100 days to be born in the United States. I shouldn’t have been surprised. Beyond the celebrities, as a child I was friends and played basketball for years with two other June 25s, and one of them had a twin sister. But, still, I was surprised.

All of this post is to say, check out friend Matt’s years-old-but-still-cool visualization of how many people are born on each day of the year.

Then explain to me who any of these YouTube celebrities are. Via Famous Birthdays Dot Com, they were all born on my birthday. George Michael and Dell Curry, thanks for being there.

I guess it’s birthday horoscopes or nothing

This sad milestone was a long time coming, but June was the first month since March 2002 where I didn’t post anything at all in this blog. Life has been wildly busy. We bought a house and moved! We spent a few weeks in the Pacific Northwest and then North Carolina. In the meantime, work for both of us has been in more hectic periods.

But I read this poem called “How to Spend a Birthday” the other day and thought, “If you can’t blog about birthday horoscopes, what good is this blog?” Tough but fair. “Let the drunken mariachis blaze their way, / streaking like crazed hyena / over a brown hill, just underneath / a perfect birthday moon.”

So, onto the birthday horoscopes for June 25, 2017.

Holiday Mathis: “You get fantastic results as a leader who asks people to do their best. You’re not looking for perfection, just for honesty and solid efforts. You’ll be overjoyed with the spoils in August. Make a tidy arrangement in November; more rewards come in February. Diversify your interests and change up your crew in 2018. Capricorn and Virgo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 16, 5, 40 and 28.”

Eugenia Last: “Share your thoughts and feelings. Know what you are up against and remain moderate when asked to pitch in, donate or take on too much. Indulgence and overreacting will hold you back. Take small but manageable steps forward and you will reach your destination with fewer delays and more rewards. Offer peace and love, not discord and excess. Your numbers are 3, 14, 22, 25, 29, 36, 41.”

Georgia Nichols: “You have the courage of your own convictions. You love to travel and experience different lifestyles. This year will bring excitement, adventure and more freedom than you have experienced in recent years. It’s a time to move away from old routines and feel loose and free! For many, a major change will occur, perhaps as significant as what occurred around 2008. It’s time to test your future!”

Jacqueline Bigar: “This year you often want to relate to others more openly and with greater sensitivity. Your inclination to want to fix situations and help people emerges. Be careful, as your ‘fix’ might not be what the person in question wants. If you are single, you could meet someone who fulfills many of your fantasies. Though this relationship might not be forever, you will experience a lot of passion. If you are attached, the two of you often spend hours laughing together. Curb a tendency to spend a lot and break the budget. LEO gets uncomfortable around you, as you seem to see right through him or her.”

Sally Brompton: “A Mars-Jupiter link on your birthday will boost both your energy and your enthusiasm – and therefore your chances of success – but it will also make you more reckless than you need to be. If you look before you leap you’ll be okay. If not…”

Love that ellipsis. I’m excited for the year ahead.

If June 25 is your birthday: 2016

I always feel the need to say this: I only look at my horoscope one day a year. Glad to see the optimism across the board this time. We’ll see. On to a new year.

Holiday Mathis: “Whatever you think will be the best part of this year, you’re wrong. You’ll grow in ways you weren’t expecting, have adventures you never dreamed of and luck you wouldn’t have called. So open up your mind and fall into this mystery box of a year. You’re in for some thrilling highs and love galore. Scorpio and Gemini adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 3, 9, 13, 4 and 22.”

Jeraldine Saunders: “You can be inspired by something you read or someone you meet during the next three to four weeks. Write down your ideas as they may be well worth pursuing in the future. The fall may be the best one ever if you take advantage of the wisdom and good advice that falls in your lap during September and October. You may be overly generous and you will be recognized for your good traits if you merely follow through on promises. It is possible to find the job of your dreams or to make savvy financial decisions in November. You will be well equipped to take advantage of new circumstances that arise and on point to achieve your ambitions.”

Sally Brompton: “You will only reach your goals over the coming year if you are prepared to work as part of a team. Join forces with like-minded people and make it your business not only to change your own fortunes but also to change the world for the better.”

Jacqueline Bigar: “This year you follow your intuition. You see the results, and, for the most part, you like them. You find this approach to be more authentic and much easier than over-intellectualizing, though you will opt to do that, too. If you are single, you suddenly might notice that a friend has worked his or her way into your heart. You could be fearful of losing this friendship if the relationship doesn’t work out, but isn’t it worth the risk? If you are attached, you often take off on special trips together, which contributes to your bonding. You act as if you are newlyweds. PISCES is a lot like you.”

Phil Booth: “A multitude of propitious omens bode well for you in this great year ahead. The potential exists to accomplish some of your greatest goals. What was once unthinkable is now possible. Trust the benevolent spiritual force that is guiding you through a personal transformation. It’s been a difficult process, but you are winning and you will attain a well-deserved reward. A spiritual and emotional awakening is opening your life to infinite possibilities.”

Linda Black: “Generate possibilities and share your vision this year, inspiring your work (and others). Good things come through communications until autumn, when a two-year domestic bliss phase begins, and your networking reveals new educational directions. Get creative despite financial tension this winter, before making a great discovery. Graduate to the next level.”

Georgia Nicols: “It’s almost magical how you are able to realize your dreams in this lifetime. This year is one of growth, construction and building. Initially, this growth will begin quietly, which is why you might not see major changes until next year. Do what you can strengthen your financial position and reduce your debt. You are building for your future!”

Eugenia Last: “Take advantage of any opportunities you get to experience something new. Getting involved in events, activities or groups that attract people from all walks of life will be enlightening. What you learn will help you adjust your life in order to reach your optimum goal. Business and personal partnerships look promising and will inspire you to do your best. Your numbers are 4, 9, 20, 24, 31, 33, 45.”

If June 25 is your birthday: 2014

We’re here again, the one day a year I check my horoscope.

Last year’s set of birthday scopes didn’t go out on many limbs, shockingly enough. Focuses on working through long-time issues and bringing others into one’s life were on the money. But I most appreciate how Nancy Black said to back up important documents; and, sure enough in the past year of life, I finally bought a backup drive. And they say horoscopes aren’t real.

In the year ahead, I like the predictions of finding a creative mindset again. I love the talk about feeling like a hapless butterfly now but finding control and strength in the future. I’m not quite sure one could call Tony Bourdain “nurturing,” but if he can be nurturing and I can put down my nice-guy face, maybe the twain can meet in the middle. And August sounds awesome.

So, if June 25 is your birthday too…

Holiday Mathis: “Your willingness to fail is what leads to a July success of which you (and your loved ones) will be extremely proud. Seize the chance to perform as much as possible so you can work out the kinks. A mutually beneficial business relationship leads to an August windfall. November shows you traveling with a smile. Aquarius and Pisces people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 30, 21, 11, 17 and 42.”

Jeraldine Saunders: “On the roller coaster of life, you might feel you’ve reached the top during the next 6-8 weeks. You might be wiser than usual between mid-July and mid-August, so this is a good time for crucial decisions, entering into agreements, or beginning anything of importance. Sports, exercise, clubs and business associations are avenues by which you can improve your life during the summer. A fortunate meeting or beneficial opportunity in August could bring you the security and material success you crave.”

Sally Brompton: “The more others try to push you around the more they will discover that you are tougher than you look. That nice guy mask is just that – a mask – so don’t be afraid to let it slip once in a while. Emotionally and financially you’ll be better off for it.”

Jacqueline Bigar: “This year you mobilize your creativity. You might be considering taking a special trip or simply adding to your life possibilities. You also will gain financially, as you are likely to receive a promotion and/or a pay raise. If you are single, you could lavish a bit too much attention on someone you care about. Hold back a little to allow the other party to come forward. If you are attached, the two of you will want to regain some of the romantic fervor of the past. You might try many different ways, but going away together as a couple will help. GEMINI understands you a little too well.”

Phil Booth: “The turbulence that’s raging through the skies above is creating instability in our world here on planet Earth. It’s not surprising that you feel like a hapless butterfly being blown about by fierce winds. Yet butterflies have more control over their flight patterns that we might imagine. Somehow or other, they control where the wind blows them. Feathery Monarchs complete a astonishing migration between Mexico and Canada every year. By some similar miraculous twist of fate, the next twelve months will blow you into an exciting world full of hope, potential and security.”

Linda Black: “Realize a dream this year, whether business or personal. Personal growth and power surge until 7/16, when profits start rising. Act on principle. Teamwork magnifies results. Turn your passion into a business for practical fun. The lunar eclipse in Aries (10/8) propels your ambitions. Creative fun booms after 10/23. Do what you love and thrive.”

Georgia Nicols: “Colourful chef/author Anthony Bourdain (1956) shares your birthday today. You are both original and nurturing. You are warm with family and friends. You know how to earn money and invest it. You understand the environment around you and know how to inspire others to believe in you. This year is the time to build your life through your association with others. You will benefit. Make friends. Join clubs. Help others.”

Eugenia Last: “This will be a fast-paced year. You will be pushed to respond quickly. Don’t feel pressured — step back and re-evaluate what’s important. Alter your mindset to acknowledge that you cannot take on the weight of the world. Ease your stress by taking as much time to enjoy life as you do to take care of business. Your numbers are 9, 13, 17, 25, 27, 31, 46.”

If June 25 is your birthday, 2013 edition

I only check my horoscopes one day a year! And here we are.

Thanks to astrologers Holiday Mathis and Eugenia Last for agreeing four will be my lucky number in the year ahead. Thank you as well to Jeraldine Saunders for continuing to have the most fun writing these things. Last year, she predicted a wild goose chase. This year, the world is my oyster.

On with the futures…

Holiday Mathis: “Your optimism is attractive, and new relationships will spark up in July. Research and investigation will flourish in August, and you’ll settle a mystery. Good fortune comes through your efforts to entertain others in September and December. Female friendships factor into your success in the first part of 2014. Sagittarius and Scorpio adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 11, 24, 39 and 30.”

Jeraldine Saunders: “The world is your oyster between now and the end of August. You can make lasting improvements to your overall health and wellbeing, perhaps by changing your diet or gravitating toward a more spiritually enriching lifestyle. Plan ahead for the future or put key plans in motion during the next four weeks while you’re blessed with enhanced wisdom and opportunity for success. September provides a chance for you to make smart business, financial and career decisions. Romance may of key importance in January and February.”

Sally Brompton: “The level of success you enjoy over the coming year will be in direct proportion to your willingness to bring other people into your plans. On your own you can do quite a bit – but with their help you can change the world.”

Jacqueline Bigar: “This year you have many exciting options appear, yet a sense of negativity might come forward. You will need to pinch yourself in order to believe your good fortune with some of the events that occur. You start a new 12-year life cycle, and you will feel and see the difference. If you are single and want to change your status, you will meet someone appropriate. If you are attached, what would make your bond more perfect? Know that whatever it is could happen. AQUARIUS is challenging, but he or she is a good friend.”

Phil Booth: “Something from you past, some sort of painful experience, is lingering on too long and retarding your ability to capture the benefits of some very positive developments that are taking place now. Your appreciation of all that is good in your life will begin to grow in the coming months. The bad will shrivel away and all that is good will blossom and flourish. The future will seduce you with its beauty and potential.”

Nancy Black: “Expansive Jupiter (planet of good fortune, success and generosity) moves into Cancer today to perfectly launch your year. Move up a level at work and in romance. Back up important documents, and monitor finances closely. Learn from the competition. Nurture your roots, and share delicious flavors with love.”

Georgia Nicols: “Your originality is one of the most captivating things about you. Others are intrigued with your conceptions. You’re visual in your concepts and can sometimes make your dreams come true. You’re a strong nurturer with both family and friends. Many of you have excellent money savvy. Your year ahead will be the beginning of a fresh, exciting cycle. Open any door!”

Eugenia Last: “Opportunities are in sight. It will be important not to let anything pass you by. The fear of change is your enemy, so embrace life and everything that’s offered. Love, romance and intrigue can be in your future if you are willing to take a chance and adopt an expressive and innovative approach to whatever comes your way. Your numbers are 4, 13, 17, 21, 27, 36, 43.”

If June 25 is your birthday, 2012 edition

It’s June 25, the one day a year I read my horoscopes.

Looking back at last year’s birthday horoscopes, the results were mixed. Somehow. Not sure what victory Holiday Mathis was expecting in July. Sally Brompton’s “total success” proved elusive. But everyone said to moderate emotion, and that generally worked out well. No one made huge, specific predictions last year. Somehow.

This year? Holiday Mathis continues to go out on more limbs than other folks — except Jeraldine Saunders, who predicts a wild goose chase. Somehow. But who can complain? The stars have told an 89-year-old, soothsaying former Love Boat cruise director that I should watch out for a wild goose chase. Who am I to dismiss their goose?

Holiday Mathis: “You’ll have a strong sense of purpose. You’ll live where you fit in, and you’ll enjoy your lifestyle. July brings a chance to help your loved ones, and you’ll make a remarkable difference. In September, you’ll learn the ropes in some way. By November, you’ll start to cash in on your experience. October is filled with romance. Pisces and Scorpio people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 19, 2, 3, 39 and 18.”

Jeraldine Saunders: “You’re likely to sail through the next several months on calm waters, especially where business, career and job are concerned. You possess ample energy and should use it wisely. If you work hard, don’t be surprised if you receive an opportunity for advancement in September as a reward. During November, you could become overly competitive when ambitions for material success kick in, so hold off on major decisions or commitments. In December and January, you may get caught up in a wild goose chase and are prone to overextending yourself financially or romantically. Life may offer you a chance to make permanent improvements to your health and happiness next April.”

Sally Brompton: “Success will be yours if you focus on what you are passionate about and don’t waste time on what other people say you should be doing. Always follow what your inner voice tells you – it’s your guide to getting the most out of life.”

Jacqueline Bigar: “Happy Birthday! This year you make a major change involving your personal and/or domestic life. You have been weighing the pros and cons of a matter that has been making you sad. Finally, discussions can happen. If you are single, you might be up for a change of pace. This year could find you meeting someone significant to your life history. If you are attached, an open exchange between you and your partner will lead to solutions. Recognize the role that finances play in your interactions. Become more organized and disciplined, and you only can gain. Take good care of yourself. VIRGO can be critical, but he or she evokes a response from you.”

Phil Booth: “Obstacles have been piling up and impeding your way forward in regard to an essential process you are working on. The coming year will be a lot more constructive and reassuring than what you are generally used to. A certain upsetting issue that’s been up in the air will come safely down to the ground and put your mind at ease.”

CafeAstrology.com: “A higher purpose to your life is what you seek this year, and you rely more heavily upon your intuition in order to achieve it. You could find that your intuition is subtly enhanced and that you’re often in the right place at the right time, probably because your hunches are more likely to be correct. You tune into your imaginative and artistic side. This is a good year for self-improvement programs or efforts. The need to ‘get away from it all’ — for some peace and quiet now and again — will be strong. A more sensitive — even mysterious — persona is projected this year, and this can attract pleasantly unusual circumstances (and people) into your life.”

Linda Black: “Confidence and optimism arise to flavor the coming year, generating new opportunities for leadership in July. Keep providing great service. Meditate or lose yourself in nature when you need a peace break. Your network keeps expanding, with love and attention. Go for balance, health and happiness. Greet people with an open hand. Listen carefully to your partner’s crazy suggestion. Pay attention to details, as they’ll be useful. Facilitate creativity in others.”

Georgia Nicols: “Canadian senator, humanitarian, author and retired general, Romeo Dallaire (1946) shares your birthday. You are imaginative and original. You’re also aware of what you’re dealing with, including your limitations, which is why you succeed. However, it’s important for you to have the respect and support of others. In turn, you are nurturing to others as well. In the year ahead, something you’ve been involved with for nine years will end or diminish to make room for something new.”

Eugenia Last: “Concentrate on home, family and creativity. Develop your environment to suit the needs of those you love. The more activity you can drum up in familiar places, the better you will do. You may not enjoy change, but it will improve your life. Apply pressure where it’s needed to reach your goals. Your numbers are 3, 8, 15, 22, 30, 42, 46.”
