New York Observer columnist Ron Rosenbaum analyzes the origins, gender and cultural evolutions and usages of “dude” in his latest piece. What prompted the article? Students, apparently, at my alma mater.
He writes: It was in the second week of May; I was in a car somewhere off a freeway exit in Chicago with two journalism students who had picked me up at OHare to take me to a guest-lecture gig at Medill Journalism School. We seemed to be lost and, as I recall, the woman in the back seat said to the woman at the wheel, “Dude, I think were going the wrong way.”
