Director, Web and Engagement

Manages the strategy and development of the NPR site and the content-management system for all digital publishing. Leads teams of developers, designers, journalists, and business stakeholders in a fast-paced, metrics-smart Agile environment. Oversees pitching of all large digital projects to leadership. Participates regularly in overall NPR strategy.

Led a mobile-first responsive overhaul of site design and infrastructure, a user-friendly CMS redesign, the creation of sponsorship units, newsroom-wide training, new uses of NPR’s API, and many other projects, including experiments with listening, local-station integration and news verticals.

Product Innovation Manager

Developed digital products with content and business teams, as well as vendors, clients and cross-division Gannett partners. Projects included: niche verticals, discussion tools, making one of the first iPad apps, cause marketing, sponsorship strategies, and spread of innovation techniques. Received the Knight fellowship to the Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change and won staff awards. Spoke at the American Society of News Editors, the National Endowment for Democracy, the NewsVision conference, and (on digital narratives) a Bruce Springsteen symposium.

Network Editor

Until January 2009. Led “network journalism” strategies for reader engagement and news community building. Managed a multimillion-piece UGC environment and developed UGC standards. Led training for 500-person staff. Co-created new photo-editing tools. Joined Gannett’s innovation team, trained with IDEO, facilitated idea workshops, and won Chairman’s Award. Spoke at Online News Association conference, Pluck Socialize and Knight Digital Media Center.

News Writer

Until March 2007. Co-created the On Deadline blog, a news aggregation pioneer, and wrote 2,000 posts. Won newsroom awards and led blog training. Served as newsroom lead for a full digital relaunch, designing the new CMS and Photoshop tools, creating newsroom-friendly workflows and training plans, and managing rollout impacts.
