CNN.com material

After receiving my master's degree from Northwestern, I accepted a graduate fellowship with CNN.com and, later, a job. During my time there, I produced CNN and wire stories for the site in breaking news and daily situations, building the articles out with photos, fact boxes, related links, and interactive elements, like galleries and explainers.

While most of my work was news producing, I managed to work in some original material. I started with an interview-based photo gallery in the CNN Center atrium, talking to visitors about the possible baseball strike, and continued from there.

Sept. 6, 2002: Cities responding to 9/11 'wake-up call'
... Update to site's "Prepared Cities" project checked back with officials in major American cities about their protection and emergency measures taken since the Sept. 11 attacks. I also reported the "City Updates: Top 5 actions" section of the project, available on its front page.

Jan. 28, 2003: Talkin' with the Big Man
... Interview with the E Street Band's Clarence Clemons.

April 8, 2003: Military man Brooks steps up to the mike
... Profile of the War in Iraq's first Qatar podium presence.

April 10, 2003: Garner seeks to reprise his success
... Profile of the head of American post-war efforts in Iraq.

June 25, 2003: Coalition deaths fewer than in 1991
... In-depth review of coalition casualties during major combat in Iraq.

Also serving as CNN.com's representative to the network's Military Desk, I rewrote packages from television; interviewed CNN's contributing staff of generals, then shaping Web-only columns; and tracked down answers from our experts to the site staff's military-related queries.

Prior to the war's start, in addition to my Web producing, I also wrote introductions for the site of interviews conducted by CNN International's The Music Room. Credited introductions to interviews included those of Oasis and David Bowie. Uncredited introductions included Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden), Britney Spears and Usher.
